Native of Madison. At time of his marriage he was from Saratoga, NY. He joined Berlin Congregational Church on 05 FEB 1847 by certificate. He earned a B.A. from Yale in 1853 and an M.A. in 1856. In 1888, he received a Ph. D from the University of the City of New York Letters. He served as Assistant Principal of the Academy on Worthington Ridge. Charles was an eloquent proponent of standard time based on hour meridians and creations of time zones because of his interest in railroads and the departure and arrival of trains.. He was given free passage for life on American railroads for life. He was killed by a Delaware & Hudson train in 1904.
