During 1812 along with brother, Alvin, started first factory in area which was a small brass goods plant in what is now Berlin. In 1800 during the process of cutting brass into thin sheets of varying sizes their father, James, noticed that brass created different notes on the musicl scale, depending on their size and thickness. He fashioned little hollow spheres from the separate brass plates, inserting small stones in each. He then strung them together on a leather strap and jingled - on a wintry evening slieghbells were born.
