William and son had a tannery on east branch of Carnelles or Stocking Brook early in the 1800's 1/2 mile above the junction of Carnelles and Stocking Brook. It was the boast of the junior partner that he could "box the craft" meaning that he could perform all the necessary work from the green hides to the finished boots and shoes.
