1 The progenitor of all the the Brandegee family in Conn., he came to Newington at age 9 or 13 (conflict in Brandegee and North.) Family bible records that he was 22, his wife 16 when married. He owned the covenant in New Britain on July 27, 1755. The name in early records is spelled variously as "Brandigat" and "Brandigee." He was a weaver by trade and sent out vessels from Rocky Hill to the West Indies. In 1762 he bout land on Christian Lane and set up a store. He died at sea at age 36 on his passage from Guadaloupe to Conn. A stone was erected to his memory and some of his children are buried there. Ironically, his son, Jacob, also died at sea at age 21. North records that the original Brandegee burial site was on Christian Lane where there is still a cemetery, but that the stones were removed to a family yard in Berlin St. [i.e. Worthington Ridge] and that his grandson, Jacob, placed a family monument there when it was incorporated into South [now Maple] Cemetery.
