Baptized in the Kensington Congregational Church. His mother died a few minutes before the child was baptized. The "Separates" held meetings at his home. Later in life he became a Baptist and probably his followers formed the Baptist meeting or Society of Kensingon, the certificate of those members are on record between 1805-1816. The Separates were the group that eventually left Kensington Congregational Church and formed what is now the Berlin Congregational Church.
