Emma was the 16th of 17 children of Capt. Samuel and Lydia [Hinsdale] Hart. She was the sister of Mrs. Almira H.L. Phelps. Emma was a famous teacher and founder and principal of Troy Female Seminary in 1821. She probably started the 1st PTA in the original Academy. She was a writer of many textbooks and is classed among the noted poets of America. She was the first Superintendent of Schools in Kensington from 1840 - 1842. In 1907 she was posthumously elected to N.Y. University Hall of Fame.
