Baptized at the Kensington Congregational Church (KCC) with his sister, Ellen. He was the designer of and raised funds for the Civil War Soldier's Monument east of KCC. He was a leader in procuring the pipe organ for KCC in 1865.
During the Civil War, he built a stone and cement home in Kensington on High Road using cement from the family mill located in Kensington. He was a local agent at Berlin Railroad Station. At the age of 16 years, he had a painting loft above the station.
He became a landscape and portrait painter and studied unter Thomas Cumming and Daniel Huntington in New York City.
