Create a sweet, woodland friend out of a pinecone and some simple supplies. Invite them to stay and keep you company or set them free to befriend a small human.

There will not be an in-person event this month.

Supplies are limited, so place your hold as soon as possible. Once all of the kits are reserved, there will be a waiting list. If a kit is not picked up after 5 days, it will go to the next person on the list.

Registration opens December 30. Once you’ve placed a hold, kits will be available for pickup Thursday, January 6.

    Included in Kit

    • Pinecone (1)
    • Felt (2) – 4”x4” and 2×2”
    • Pipe cleaner (1)
    • 1” wooden bead (1)
    • Templates for the gnome’s hat, gloves, and feet (1)

    Additional Supplies Needed

    • Scissors
    • Hot glue and hot glue gun
    • Colored pencils OR black and red ballpoint pens

    Instructions

    Step 1

Cut out templates. Using the 4×4” felt square, cut one gnome hat from the ¼ circle template and 2 mittens from the mitten template. You can trace these on your felt with a pen to make cutting easier. Just make sure you flip over the mitten template before tracing the second mitten and cut inside your pen lines, so your tracing won’t show.

    Step 2

Using the 2×2” felt square, cut out the gnome’s feet using the remaining template.

    Step 3

Roll the felt for the gnome’s hat into a cone shape and measure it against the wooden bead to see how much to overlap the felt when making the hat. Keeping this in mind, apply hot glue to one edge of the felt piece for the gnome’s hat and roll it into a cone shape. Hold until it dries. Alternate Option: If you’re handy with a needle, you could sew the hat together with a contrasting thread color for an extra decorative touch.

    Step 4

Look at your pinecone to see how well the bead will sit on top. You may have to remove a few of the scales to create a spot where you can easily glue on the bead. Attach the bead (holes on top and bottom) to the pinecone.

    Step 5

Apply hot glue to the inside bottom edge of the hat and attach to the wooden bead, making sure that the seam of your hat faces the back.

    Step 6

Check the bottom of your pinecone to see how balanced it is. If your pinecone is wobbly, you can remove a few scales, place a penny flat on your table and attach your pinecone to it with hot glue or glue on a few small pieces of felt for balance. Use hot glue to attach the gnome’s feet.

    Step 7

Wrap the pipe cleaner in between the layers of pinecone scales from the back to the front to create the arms. If you work this in enough, it should hold its place. Fold the ends of the pipe cleaner back as much as needed to shorten the arms.

    Step 8

Apply hot glue to the back of each felt mitten and glue each to one end of the pipe cleaner. If needed, add some glue to hold the pipe cleaner in place on the back.

    Step 9

Using a black colored pencil or ballpoint pen, draw on the gnome’s eyes. Repeat with red for the mouth.

    Step 10

Go find a home for your gnome! As gnomes are woodland creatures, we personally recommend a pleasant, woodsy spot to live, ideally where a young human might meet them, have a magical gnome encounter and make a new friend. ?
