Early American Art and Science and the Rise of Landscape Tourism in the Connecticut Valley

Presenter Peter M. LeTourneau, Ph.D. will explore the unique geology, ecology, history, and cultural significance of Connecticut’s Traprock Ridgelands.

Featuring highlights from The Traprock Landscapes of New England: Environment, History, and Culture.

Landscapes of national significance, the traprock highlands of the Connecticut Valley are among the most beautiful natural features in the U.S. The rise of American landscape tourism and environmental conservation was greatly influenced by the artists and scientists working in the Connecticut Valley in the 19th century. Participants will gain an “insider’s view” of this unique region, including tales, legends, secret spots, and little-known local history. The effort to establish a Connecticut Valley National Heritage Corridor will be discussed.

A book signing will follow the lecture (cash or check only).

Sponsored by Berlin-Peck Memorial Library and the Berlin Historical Society.
