Today Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) is one of the most celebrated names in music history. This was not the case during his lifetime. Schubert worked in relative obscurity and failed to hear public performances of his greatest works. It would take decades after his death before so much of his music would be discovered and heard for the first time.

Join Jeffrey Engel, a music historian, to discover the long history of Schubert’s ascent to the pantheon of great composers and hear excerpts from several of his compositions.

About the Presenter

Jeffrey Engel is a music historian who has been giving lectures devoted to music history in colleges, libraries, retirement communities and other venues for some twenty years. He believes that such lectures should be entertaining as well as informative.
