Changes to OverDrive ebook holds

OverDrive’s new hold redelivery feature gives you more flexibility and control over your holds.

February 29, 2020

If you use OverDrive to download ebooks, audiobooks, and videos, we have good news!

OverDrive’s new hold redelivery feature gives you more flexibility and control over your holds. This new feature lets you to skip holds you’re not ready for, but keep your place on the waiting list. It replaces auto-checkout, which would automatically lend you your ebook (whether you were ready to read it or not!)

When you get notification that your hold is available, you have a choice of actions:

  1. Borrow the title.
You will have a 3-day window where you can borrow your title. If you miss it, don’t worry! You’ll get a second chance (see “Take no action.”)
  2. Suspend the hold.
You can also choose to suspend the hold, passing it along to the next person in line. After a period of time (which you set) OverDrive will offer you the book again.
  3. Cancel the hold.
You will be removed from the hold list for this item.
  4. Take no action.
If you miss the notification, OverDrive will automatically suspend your hold for 7 days. If you take no action the second time, your hold will be cancelled.
