From the French and Indian War to Afghanistan and Iraq, American men and women have placed themselves in harm’s way under the American flag. Soldiers serving in the wars of the United States have also often been civilian volunteers who left farms and factories to fight under conditions challenging to the very core of their humanity.
How to honor that sacrifice has been a question for our country since its inception.

This presentation will discuss the ways veterans have been recognized for their service, and how that recognition has changed over time. It will range widely, from creating our first veterans’ organization, the Cincinnati, to observing holidays like Memorial Day, sponsoring the creation of national cemeteries, and passing the GI Bill, among others.
