The American chestnut was once a dominant keystone tree in forests from Georgia to Maine. An invasive fungal pathogen identified in 1904 decimated this tree within 50 years. Come learn more about the environmental and economic value the American chestnut once provided, the pathogen that resulted in its demise, and what is being done to restore this valuable tree.
Sponsored by the Berlin Land Trust and Berlin Historical Society.
The American Chestnut Foundation
Founded in 1983, the mission of The American Chestnut Foundation is returning the American chestnut to its native range. Sixteen state chapters from Alabama to Maine are involved in this effort. The CT Chapter, founded in 1992, manages a number of activities to help restore a tree that would be of great ecologic and economic benefit.
About the Presenter
Fred Behringer is Vice President of the CT chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation. Recently retired from a career spanning plant science and analytical chemistry, he is involved in efforts to help preserve and protect our environment and increase science literacy. He lives in Old Lyme.
